Domtar Builds To Support The Community

posted by Janey

Domtar Pulp and Paper and Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre recently participated in a United Way Day of Caring for the Centre.
KSACC was in need of a display rack for their informational brochures and Rob Shaw, a carpenter from Domtar, stepped up to take on the challenge.
The result: a beautiful wooden display rack perfect for the needs of KSACC.

On Friday KSACC took the opportunity to thank Domtar employees for their support.  In attendance was Rob Shaw; Eric Ashby, Domtar Manager; Murray Matheson, President of CEP Local 10B; Brenda Aynsley, ED Thompson Nicola Cariboo United Way; and Cynthia Davis, Coordinator of KSACC.

United Way funding allows Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre to make their information relevant to kids.  KSACC has plans to further develop its website, start a FaceBook page, and are currently working to educate parents on the meaning of the text messages their children receive and send.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Domtar Pulp and Paper and Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre for their committment to our community!

Participating in a Day of Caring promotes a deeper understanding of community issues and provides an excellent team building opportunity for employees. The projects allow workplaces to demonstrate social responsibility and to make a visual impact in the communities where they live and work. PINK SHIRT DAY 2010 - Bullying Stops Here!

posted by Janey

The call to make a statement against bullying by wearing pink, met an overwhelming response in 2008 and 2009 – from schools, unions, non-profit groups, businesses, and politicians.

This growing movement began with two incredible teenagers from Nova Scotia, who organized a high school protest to wear pink in sympathy of a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied.  They purchased pink t-shirts from a discount store and after sending messages out to their classmates, distributed them to all the boys in their school.  When the bullied boy walked in and saw them, his face spoke volumes.

The bullies were never heard from again.

Imagine if we all stepped up and showed the same courage to stop bullying – we personally invite you to take part in this important anti-bullying initiative by encouraging your staff to wear pink on April 14, 2010.

Visit the Pink Shirt Day website at www.pinkshirtday.ca for more information and updates.  You can also contact Tanya or Jennifer at the Kamloops Boys and Girls Club to become involved or to purchase official Pink Shirt Day t-shirts.  Cost for the shirts is $5, with the proceeds going towards the Boys and Girls Club of Kamloops.

Let’s all say NO to bullying!

Thompson Nicola Cariboo United Way supports many programs and agencies in the region.

One of these programs is the Youth Zone in 100-Mile House.  The Youth Zone, run by Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre, provides a positive place for youth to connect with the community and their peers as well as opportunities for youth to give back to their community.

The Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre is very pleased with the success of the Youth Zone reporting that they host 40-50 youth at the zone every day and up to 70 youth on Friday nights!

Domtar Delivers at the Kamloops Food Bank

posted by Janey

15 employees from Domtar Pulp and Paper Inc. were hard at work this morning at a Day of Caring with the Kamloops Food Bank.  The team made food hampers for families and individuals and prepared the warehouse for incoming food from the Spring Rotary Food Drive on Saturday.  Last year’s Rotary Food Drive brought in 30,000 pounds of food so there was lots of work to be done.   Thanks for your hard work Domtar!
