United Way and BC Youth Week 2010
United Way’s Youth Advisory Council is set and ready for a fantastic BC Youth Week (May 1st - 7th) this year.
Youth Week is an international celebration of youth held annually during the first week of May. It is a week of fun, interaction and celebration intending to build a strong connection between young people and their communities and to profile the issues, accomplishments and diversity of youth across the province.
Starting on Sunday, May 2nd, the Youth Advisory Council is hosting an afternoon of volunteering at PIT Stop, a free community meal program run out of the Kamloops United Church. A team of 16 youth from a variety of organizations will come together to feed up to 150 people that are in need of a hot meal.
On Wednesday, May 5th, United Way’s 2nd annual city-wide Youth Day of Caring will take place around the city. High school students and youth groups will simultaneously complete a number of projects at non-profit organizations which could include painting, landscaping, sorting donated food, or even construction. They will come together to celebrate their achievements with a BBQ and entertainment at Spirit Square.
Friday, May 7th the 2nd annual “Say What” youth conference sponsored by CURA and the Centre for Community Based Youth Health Research at TRU will take place @ Henry Grube. The day will offer youth a chance to learn about local research being done with their demographic and give them a chance to respond through a variety of workshops and forums. Check out the 2009 United Way Youth Initiative Grant recipients who will be in attendance to showcase their complete projects.
In addition, throughout BC Youth Week, the Boys and Girls Club youth drop in program will be displaying their artwork at the Kamloops Art Gallery through their “Tell Your Story” project. This project was funded by a Youth Initiative Grant and will be giving “high potential” youth an opportunity to tell their story and express themselves through a creative medium. They will be mentored by a trained artist and art therapist and given the chance to develop new skills and work with a variety of materials. The Youth Advisory Council is proud to support this project.
