2009 Community Fund Applications

Here are the 2009 funding applications for each of the following areas:

Logan Lake/Ashcroft

Central Cariboo

South Cariboo

On Wednesday, July 15th, the Dunes Golf Course Grounds Staff, led by Darren Low, donated their time and expertise for a Day of Caring at the office of the Kamloops & District Elizabeth Fry Society, as well as the Society’s Elizabeth Court Housing Complex. This talented and energetic crew worked hard despite the blazing sun and heat to clean up the yard and gardens at the office, laying new mulch, weeding, and doing some small repairs.

After a delicious lunch provided by Elizabeth Fry, the team moved on to tackle the courtyards at Elizabeth Court, pulling weeds, cleaning up some graffiti and planting some new plants in the garden boxes. Both sites saw a major improvement, and the Dunes crew enjoyed a fun day of laughter, team building and sunshine. The Kamloops & District Elizabeth Fry Society is an active non-profit volunteer agency that focuses mainly on assisting anyone who is, or could be, in conflict with the law. The Society provides a wide range of interactive programs and services to the community.

Day of Caring is an annual community initiative designed to foster a sense of caring through volunteerism. It is not a fund-raising event, but an opportunity for businesses and their employees to undertake worthwhile projects for non-profit organizations. Not only do the non-profit organizations benefit from valuable assistance in completing a much needed project that would not have been done otherwise, but the employee groups are given the opportunity to see first hand what valuable services are being provided by annual contributions to the United Way.

Float the South Thompson River in Kamloops on August 21st, 2009 to be one of many helping support youth outreach services and programs in the local area. Check out the details below!

On Saturday, July 20th, the Kamloops & District Labour Council pitched in at St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Kamloops for another United Way Day of Caring. The basement of the Cathedral is used during the winter months (from November through March) for the Kamloops “Out of the Cold” program. The initiative houses the homeless every Sunday and Wednesday night, plus any other nights when temperatures drop below -10 degrees. During the winter season the church sees a lot of use, so a fresh coat of paint and a little TLC refreshed the basement and prepped it for another season of “Out of the Cold”. A delicious BBQ lunch was also provided for the volunteers, and Jim Waldie of the Labour Council and St. Paul’s Cathedral provided a full tour and history of the site. Overall, it was a fun and very successful day.

The 2009 Community Carnival was a Success!

posted by Melodie

Kamloops once again provided us with beautiful, hot sunny weather for the 6th Annual Community Carnival, put on in partnership with the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association. 30 non-profit agencies and local vendors set up on the 300 block of Victoria Street on Thursday, July 16th for a full 6 hours of games, activities, music, food and even magic.

An event for all ages, the Carnival saw tremendous support from the community with generous donations from Jumpzone, Fun Factor, Rogers Rental, Ken’s Catering, Falcon Lanes Bowling Alley, Desert Gardens and Radio NL. With help from these sponsors, the Carnival was able to host bouncy castles, a dunk tank, fresh popcorn, hot dogs and burgers, and also provided resources to participants who needed a little assistance. Lots of other fun games and challenges were also put on by non-profit agencies, to build up the fun carnimval atmosphere and also share information about the organizations and their important community roles.

Overall, the Community Carnival was a fantastic summer day in the beautiful Kamloops downtown core. Tons of fun was had by all, and fundraising for local non-profits was a big success. THANK YOU again to all those who participated and visited the downtown core that day.
