Upcoming Community Assessment Workshops

posted by Melodie

CAAN

(Community Assessment & Action Network)

PRESENTS:

Giving Youth What They Need To Succeed

THE POWER OFONE

One friend, One family, One neighbour, One world, One YOU; Helping ONE person love, hope, and change.

How Can We Give Our Children What They Need to Succeed In Life?

That’s probably a question that crosses the minds of every parent at least once every day…and it’s not just about parents. What can teachers, grandparents, school caretakers, seniors, uncles/aunts, coaches, business people, neighbours, and young people themselves do to make certain that every boy and girl in our school and community acquires the life building blocks they need to help them grow to happy, responsible and respectful adulthood.

On 3 consecutive Tuesdays - March 31st, April 7th, & April 14th, individuals of Kamloops and surrounding communities will have a chance to learn about some ideas and research that are sweeping the world and changing the way in which adults, children and young people are working together to build healthier, more supportive environments in which we all live.

You’ll walk away with a better understanding of why some kids appear to grow up with ease while other’s struggle; why some young people beat the odds in difficult situations – while others get trapped.

Board Members Needed - KTRA

posted by Melodie

Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association (KTRA) was established in 1989 as a non-profit organization. Our objective is to create a safe, therapeutic environment for adults and children with physical, developmental, and medical challenges, where an individual can be his or herself and is accepted and valued for who they are. Using the motivating medium of horse care and riding, we draw an individual’s attention to their strengths, successes, and most importantly, build self-esteem. Through horse care and riding, we teach those social and behavioral skills necessary to function and succeed in a social world. It is these skills that are vital to self-esteem and ultimately determine the place a person fills in this society.

We are seeking individuals with a commitment to the community from all walks of life to serve on our governing board, so that we may build a local community resource of tremendous value. We are seeking people who have the following qualities:

  • passion and enthusiasm for improving the lives of less than able individuals
  • interest in and commitment to the mission and goals of the organization
  • background and/or interest in therapeutic riding
  • willingness to contribute time and energy for monthly board meetings and other activities

Special competencies are highly valued but not required. We seek individuals with expertise or an interest in nonprofit board experience, strategic planning, public relations, fundraising, and community networking. Besides serving a worthy cause, the opportunity to serve on our board allows you to gather important skills in nonprofit management, expand your network of progressive allied organizations/people, and have a fulfilling (and fun) experience in the process.

Initial term of service on the governing board is for one year, with a possibility of extended service. The KTRA board is a working, proactive board, and besides the monthly board meeting, board members are active on committees and participate in fundraising, etc.

Our board max is 9 members and so we have a limited number of positions available. Selection for board seats will be made by the current board on a case by case basis.

Please note board members must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and will be subject to a criminal check.

Please apply in confidence to:

Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association
Box 1497, Kamloops, BC. V2M 5X1

Last night the United Way Youth Advisory Council had a wonderful guest speaker, Cheryl Blackwell, who shared her wisdom around public speaking. We all picked up some valuable tips and will try them out at our next meeting with impromptu 1-minute talks. She was an inspiration to all of us - and what a great voice to listen to. Thank you so much for your time, Cheryl!
