Vagina Monologues - Kamloops

The Kamloops Women’s Resource Group Society will be hosting the Vagina Monologues again this year.

When: February 13th @ 7pm and February 14th @ 2pm and 7pm

Where: TRU Clocktower Theatre

Cost: between $10-$15 on a sliding scale based on income.

Tickets can be bought from the Thompson Rivers University Student Union (TRUSU), ASK Wellness on the North Shore, and at Movie Mart Downtown.

This year’s spotlight will feature the Democratic Republic of Congo and the current epidemic of violence against women in the region.

All proceeds from the event will go to ending violence against women and children.

Free childcare is available at the event, provided by a licensed early childhood educator.

Special musical guests will be performing as well.

Walk for Memories - Kamloops

January is Alzheimer’s Awareness month. Join Walk for Memories this Sunday to help raise awareness and funds for this disease. The walk will be held at Tournament Capital Centre (TCC).

New Cooler for the Kamloops Food Bank

A local business has taken on the task of raising funds for desperately needed equipment at the Kamloops Food Bank. Eagle Homes president, Mark Ellis, was shocked to find the Food Bank’s cooler on its last legs and vowed to do something. He set his goal to raise $45,000 by March to purchase a new walk-in cooler for the organization.

ABC Canada Family Literacy Day

Saturday marks the third annual ABC Canada Family Literacy Day here in Kamloops. Henry Grube will host the day that includes storytelling with the mayor, music, crafts, puppet shows and entertainer Tina Hebner and friends.

The event will run from 10am - 1pm.

Norkam Music Department - Flea Market

New Employment Program for Women

The Kamloops YMCA-YWCA has started up its Willow Tree program again to help women re-enter the workforce. This community bridging program helps those women facing barriers to employment by offering workshops on personal development, employment, completing educational requirements, and developing personal goal plans.

The program is not restricted to women on income assistance.

Interiors Savings is Generous

Interior Savings Credit Unions have established the Lifelong Learner Bursary endowment to give students at UBC Okanaga, Okanagan College and Thompson Rivers University a total of $55,000. Each institution has matched the donation to provide annual bursaries for their students.

The Lifelong Learner Bursary is intended for those students who are returning to post-secondary education after a break and have one or more dependents. The recipient must demonstrate active community involvement. The first bursaries will be awarded for the Fall 2009 term.

Hogger for a Day

On December 18th, the Hogger for A Day Contest closed. The winning entry was held by Lloyd Cosar of Kamloops, BC. He took advantage of his winning ticket to “drive the CP train from Kamloops to Ashcroft on Monday Janaury 12th. Accompanying him were  Guy Humphreys Engineer, Howard Svehla Conductor, Bill Balyx CP Rail Road Manager and Melodie Grabner United Way. It was a fantastic ride  on Engine # 8858 with about 7000 feet of payload behind!! Lloyd said it was the thrill of a lifetime!! Upon returning to Kamloops he was ceremoniously “certified” as an engineer. Glad you had a great day Lloyd.
