On Saturday, August 14, a summer filled with riding lessons came to a close as the Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association 2nd annual Horse Show took place. The sunny morning was busy as riders participated in a variety of different categories with many competing more than once. With participants as young as three years old the spectators were kept busy and had plenty of entertainment. The day ended on a positive note as prizes were awarded to all and everyone enjoyed a delicious barbecue. Our United Way Youth Advisory Council member, Nicole, worked especially hard on the Horse Show as KTRA’s summer student and Fundraising Event Coordinator. Congratulations to the 16 riders, 26 volunteers, and amazing KTRA staff for a well-organized and fun event!!!

The Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association’s objective is to create a safe, therapeutic environment for adults and children with physical, developmental, and medical challenges, where an individual can be his/herself and is accepted and valued for who they are. Using the motivating medium of horse care and riding, they draw an individuals attention to their strengths, successes, and most importantly, build self-esteem. Through horse care and riding, KTRA teaches those social and behavioural skills necessary to function and succeed in a social world. It is these skills that are vital to self-esteem and ultimately determine the place a person fills in this society.
